IRQR Meets with Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (January 24, 09)

Arsham Parsi, the IRanian Queer Railroad's Executive Director, met with the Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MP, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Canada on Saturday, January 24, 2009.

The meeting was productive and allowed the IRQR and the Ministry to explore how they could work together to help queer Iranian asylum seekers who are fleeing their country of origin because of persecution based on their sexual orientation. Mr. Parsi presented an IRQR report regarding the challenging situation faced by queers in Iran and this led to a discussion on a wide range of issues including: queer networking within Iran, the Islamic penal code regarding homosexuality, the UNHCR process for seeking asylum, the nature of support from the Canadian Embassy, the resettlement process and of course, the IRQR's role in establishing a "railroad" to safety for these vulnerable refugees.

During the meeting, Mr. Parsi shared his deep concerns about Iranian asylum seekers who were rejected by European governments and then faced the risk of deportation. He asked Minister Kenney to find a way to support the IRQR in bringing those refugees to Canada.

The IRQR is very pleased to be engaged in partnership with the Canadian government so that a greater number of Iranian queer asylum seekers can be supported. Government support, however, is only one of the tracks of the queer railroad between Iran and Canada. The other track consists of the generous financial support of IRQR donors.
