IRQR Meets with Dr. Reza Moridi, MPP (February 06, 09)

Arsham Parsi, the IRanian Queer Railroad's Executive Director, met with Dr. Reza Moridi, Iranian Member of Ontario Parliament on Thursday, February 05, 2009.

The meeting was productive and Mr. Parsi presented an IRQR report regarding the challenging situation faced by queers in Iran and this led to a discussion on a wide range of issues including: new member of Iranian community in Ontario and need of support for them, international queer networking, the UNHCR process for seeking asylum and resettlement process and of course, the IRQR's role in establishing a "railroad" to safety for these vulnerable refugees.

During the meeting, Mr. Parsi shared his deep concerns about Iranian queer new comers in Canada who passed many boarders and conditions to arrive here, but they are still facing some kind of discrimination from Iranian community. They mostly do not prefer to be an out queer person because they have fear of Iranian community’s reactions here.  He asked Dr. Moridi to find a way to support the IRQR to make positive society for Iranian queers.

The IRQR is very pleased to be engaged in partnership with the Canadian government so that a greater number of Iranian queer asylum seekers can be supported. Government support, however, is only one of the tracks of the queer railroad between Iran and Canada. The other track consists of the generous financial support of IRQR donors.
