An Iranian gay couple left India to Canada (February 11, 09)
Supporters and Allies of IRQR and Iranian Queer Refugees,
“UNHCR submitted our case as “urgent” and “high priority” for resettlement to the Canadian embassy in New Delhi. The Canadian embassy started processing on our application on May 17, 2007, and we completed interviews with the Canadian embassy on July 19, 2007. We even received our health checkups in the same week. However, we are still waiting for our process to be complete so that we can resettle in a safer country.” They said in their telephone conversation in July 2008. You can find more information on IRQR website in Queer Refugee page.
Ali and Mohammad are so excited and happy to start their new life in Toronto. This is wonderful news for Ali, Mohammad; for IRQR; and for supporters and allies of all queer refugees.
In just a few weeks, Canadian Embassy in India received a multitude of emails urging quick action on their cases. This happy news is a testament to what international community support can help achieve.
We thank all who supported Ali and Mohammad by writing to Canadian Embassy and UNHCR for their quick action and assistance.
We also express great thanks to Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry and Mario Silva, Members of Canadian Parliament for their support and working with IRQR regarding Mohammad and Ali case. We have hope that the same will be done for other Iranian queer asylum seekers.
There are more Iranian queer refugees who are still in the lengthy and complicated process toward refugee status that need a great deal of support and assistance. We hope to have your continued support with these applicants, and will contact you in the near future for further action.
