Foreign Affairs Canada and Iranian queer (February 11, 09)

Dear Mr. Parsi,

On behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, I wish to thank you for your letter of January 30. The Minister has requested that I respond to your concerns regarding gay and lesbian Iranian refugees.

For six consecutive years, Canada has successfully led a UN General Assembly Resolution on the human rights situation in Iran. Last year's resolution was passed in the UN General Assembly December 18 (69Y-54N-57A).  The resolution calls attention to egregious human rights violations, including confirmed instances of torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, multiple public executions, persecution of minorities and arrests of human rights defenders.

The adoption of this resolution sends an important message that the international community remains committed to improving the human rights of people in Iran. I can assure you that Canada will continue to press the Government of Iran to respect fully its human rights obligations, in law and in practice.

Thank you again for writing and sharing your concerns.

Sincerely,

Mr. Dennis Horak
